Aurora Espejo Atienza is a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), a Counselling Therapist (CT), and a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) based in Alberta, offering online telehealth video sessions to clients across Canada, with the exception of QC, NS, NB, PE.

Aurora brings together clinical training, decades of professional experience in finance, information technology, and management, and the perspective gained through more than six decades of life experience. This unique blend allows her to understand both the personal and professional realities of navigating demanding roles, complex responsibilities, life transitions, and competing expectations. She brings this perspective to her work with high-functioning professionals, leaders, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, and caregivers seeking greater clarity, resilience, balance, and well-being.

You deserve a therapist who sees beyond the symptoms—to the person, the story, the strengths, and the life you are trying to build.

My Approach to Counselling

When you begin to understand your patterns with compassion, you create space for new possibilities.

At the heart of my practice is a commitment to helping you develop the insight, confidence, and practical skills needed to navigate life's challenges and create meaningful change.

I believe meaningful therapy begins when you feel safe enough to be honest, understood enough to feel less alone, and supported enough to explore change.

My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, attachment-focused, and strength-based. Rather than defining you by a diagnosis or by what has happened to you, I focus on understanding the whole person—your experiences, relationships, strengths, challenges, values, needs, and hopes for the future.

I take a holistic, integrative approach to psychotherapy, drawing on a range of evidence-informed therapeutic modalities while recognizing the interconnectedness of the mental, emotional, physical, and relational dimensions of well-being. Because each area of life can influence the others, we explore not only the challenges you are experiencing but also the broader patterns, relationships, experiences, strengths, and circumstances that may be shaping how you think, feel, respond, and navigate your life. I take a holistic and integrative approach to psychotherapy, drawing from a range of evidence-informed therapeutic modalities and guided by a biopsychosocial-spiritual framework. This approach recognizes the interconnectedness of four important pillars of well-being: biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. The spiritual dimension of well-being encompasses your personal sense of meaning, purpose, values, beliefs, hope, and connection to something greater than yourself. What matters is how you understand meaning, purpose, connection, and what gives your life significance. Rather than viewing concerns in isolation, I consider how these different dimensions of your life may influence and interact with one another. Together, we may explore your physical well-being and life experiences; thoughts, emotions, and behavioural patterns; relationships, family, culture, and social environment; as well as the values, meaning, purpose, beliefs, and sources of connection that are important to you. By understanding the whole person within the context of their life, therapy can help uncover meaningful connections and patterns, build upon existing strengths and resources, and support greater self-awareness, resilience, healing, and meaningful personal growth.

You don’t have to wait until life becomes unbearable to choose something better.

Why Clients Choose to Work with Me.

Compassionate Care. Meaningful Insight. Lasting Change.

Credentials matter—but I believe the heart of psychotherapy is the relationship we create together. As a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), I bring professional training, genuine compassion, deep empathy, and authenticity to my work. Clients often value the safe, reflective space I provide—one where they can feel truly heard and understood while gaining meaningful insights into the experiences, emotions, and patterns that may be keeping them stuck.

My approach is both catalytic and cathartic: helping you uncover insights that can open new possibilities while creating space to process emotions that may have been carried for far too long. Therapy with me is not simply about talking through problems; it is about developing greater self-understanding, strengthening your inner resources, and translating insight into meaningful change.

Above all, I strive to meet you as a genuine human being: with compassion rather than judgment, curiosity rather than assumptions, and respect for the wisdom, resilience, and lived experience you already carry. You do not have to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. Sometimes, change begins simply by having a safe place to understand what you are carrying—and discovering what may be possible from here.

Experienced in Burnout & Life Transitions

My clinical experience in Private Practice includes Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) counselling with GreenShield Health, Return-to-Work psychotherapy support for employees transitioning back from their medical leave, and providing counselling support for adults navigating Burnout, Anxiety, Depression, Life Transitions, and Emotional Wellness.

Evidence-Based & Personalized Care

My approach is trauma-informed, attachment-focused, and strengths-based, integrating evidence-based therapies such as CBT, ACT, DBT, EFT, IFS, Family Systems, Narrative Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Therapy is always tailored to your unique needs and goals.

I believe therapy should be more than a place to talk—it should be a place where meaningful change begins. My clients value my warm, compassionate coaching style and my ability to ask thoughtful questions that foster insight, clarity, and growth. Together, we'll gently explore the patterns that may be holding you back, process difficult emotions, and develop practical, evidence-based tools that fit your life. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling lighter, more hopeful, and increasingly confident in your ability to navigate life's challenges with resilience, purpose, and self-compassion.

Committed to Ongoing Professional Excellence

I am deeply committed to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development, continually strengthening my clinical knowledge and therapeutic skills through professional consultation, advanced training, and continuing education. My learning includes evidence-informed and emerging approaches to supporting a range of mental health and life concerns, including trauma and grief, burnout prevention and recovery, suicide prevention, chronic illness and life transitions, and relationship and couples therapy. This ongoing commitment allows me to thoughtfully integrate evolving research and therapeutic approaches into my practice while providing compassionate, responsive, and individualized care that reflects the unique needs, experiences, and goals of each client.

Community Builder & Volunteer Work

Beyond my clinical work, I serve as a Board Member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy (CCPA) Association's Private Practice Chapter, including 3 subcommittees specific to helping fellow therapists: (the Pulse – monthly peer case consultation, the Private Practice Webinars, and the Private Practice Annual Conference Committee). My previous volunteer work included facilitating support groups for the Suicide Support Group Services with CMHA and three community Better Choices Better Health programs for AHS (e.g., Diabetes lifestyle management).
